这些不定代词不仅在含义上有单复数之分，而且在用法上有泛指(无the)和特指(有the)之别。其用法区别可归纳如下：
1、指单数
若泛指用another，若特指用 the other。
如：
Could he get another job? 他能找到另一份工作吗?
This bag is slightly heavier than the other one. 这个包比那个包稍重一点。
2、指复数
若泛指用 other(后接复数名词)，若特指用the other(后接复数名词)。
如：
Other problems also had to be faced. 还需面对其他问题。
He runs faster than all the other boys. 他跑得比其他男孩子都快。
3、others的用法
永远表示复数意义(且其后不能再接名词)。其用法大致相当于“other+复数名词”，同样地 the others 大致相当于“the other＋复数名词”。
如：
He feels it his duty to help others. 他认为帮助别人是他的责任。
I came three hours earlier than the others. 我比其他人早来3小时。
4、another的用法
一般只能表单数，且其后接名词也只能接单数名词。但是若其后有数词或 few 修饰时，则也可接复数名词。
如：
I’m staying for another few weeks. 我还要再呆几个星期。
We need another five chairs. 我们还需要五把椅子。
5、与some 对比
与some 对比使用时，用 others(此时与 some 同义)。
如：
Some people enjoy exercise, others don’t. 一些人喜欢运动，而另一些人则不喜欢。
